When Fear Enters a Community, Mental Health Needs Rise

"Behind every request for therapy is a story of fear, uncertainty, and hope." Over the past several weeks, we've seen a significant increase in families reaching out for mental health support as immigration enforcement activity continues to rise across Oregon.

According to the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition, immigration-related arrests have steadily increased since this spring. The coalition documented 42 arrests during the first half of July, compared with 64 arrests during all of June, 47 in May, and 30 in April. Because reports are submitted voluntarily, the actual number of arrests is likely higher.

At Sanar Network, we are witnessing the emotional impact firsthand. We have experienced a noticeable increase in requests for mental health services from individuals and families facing fear, anxiety, uncertainty, and grief related to these events.

One trend is especially clear: 97% of the requests we've received are from Spanish-speaking individuals and families. This highlights the urgent need for bilingual, culturally responsive mental health providers who can offer care in a client's preferred language during this difficult time.

To our English-speaking volunteer providers, thank you for your continued generosity and commitment. While the current need is greatest for Spanish-speaking services, your willingness to support our mission is deeply appreciated and continues to make a meaningful difference.
